If you are looking for extreme horror and nail-biting, keep the light on while attempting to sleep kind of suspense, with an abundance of descriptive blood and gore, then you may not enjoy this book. If you are; however, looking for an easy to read mystery with mild suspense, mostly likable key characters and some interesting insight into the beliefs and practices of the people of the Navajo Nation living on the reservation in Northern NM, then you just may find this book to your liking. It does have some gore surrounding a murder; however, it does not abound throughout the book.Ella Clah, a principled and shrewd, Navajo police criminal investigator, along with the entire tribal police force are confronted with the murder and mutilation of a former member of their department. As the dedicated officers search for clues, they find some evidence of skinwalker scare tactics, and the usual....whole lot of.....tribal politics. Ella and her family are included on the victim list of scare tactics. Is there really a skinwalker, (Navajo witch) or is it just an impostor trying to frighten people while making the police solving of the crime more difficult. Ella and her team find themselves being shot at, stalked and intimidated around every corner and curve of the way. This is a well-constructed book, and you just may find the ending a bit of a surprise. The ending may be a bit disappointing for the fans of the Ella Clah series because it appears this just might be the last book in the series. I guess time will tell.
I enjoyed this book and do recommend it; however, I do not think it is the best of this particular series.

this chapter in Ella-s life was about changes and endings. I hope this isn't where her story ends.Ella is likeable heroine, with family, a kid and an unresolved love life. A former co worker and lover has been murdered; all indications point to Ella"s old enemies linebackers.Calling on her team & and family she must solve a complex case that will cause changes within the department. This is one of the Thurlos best. I hope it's not the last. d
This is a delightful book, filled with characters who have become familiar over the years. If you don't know Ella Clah, start at the beginning and read all of them, ending with this one. I hope the authors remain healthy because now I want to know what happens next. I can't imagine Ella as anything but a police officer. That statement isn't really a spoiler alert because her career is simply suspended in this book and not necessarily over.
A good addition to the Ella Clah series. The authors are very good at putting information about Navajo culture in all their stories which makes the books that much more interesting to read. Interesting characters and plot.
You can't say enough about a perfect book, and a wonderful pair of authors. This is an awesome book as they always are by the Thurlos. I have loved their characters from the first and I will continue to do so . Don't miss this book, this story. But, I will miss Aimee, but she lives on in her remarkable books. If you have never read Ella Clah, please start at the beginning and go forth. If you are a fan and haven't caught up then please do. This is one you don't want to miss.
Reading a "Thurlo book" is an educational experience as well as a totally enjoyable experience. You learn something about Catholicism, Nuns, cloistered life, Navajo people, their religious beliefs, hardships, life on a reservation, food, plants, the dangers of the American deserts, and other historical tidbits. All while reading a really darn good mystery. The character's come alive, the plots are intriguing and plausible.
I hope to read all their novels, before I go toes up.
I highly recommend this book and these authors!
This was the first book I read of the series. I was curious because I like mysteries and am interested in learning about other cultures . I found this book to be very interesting as you follow Ella through her investigative process and relationships(both personal and professional) I liked it. You also learn about the Navajo people and their beliefs as well. So not only do you get a well written whodunit but, you get a bit of history as well. Very well written as a matter of fact I got hooked on the series and have ordered all the books off of .
Another installment in the life of Ella Clah and the officers of Navajo Police. In this story, Ella finds a good friend murdered, apparently by skinwalkers (Navajo witches). Ella and her cousin Justine, also an officer, fight to solve the murder and return balance to the lives of the people. A related plot involves the black market in Native American relics illegal digs, internet sales, and all the chicanery that goes with the trade. Danger hits close to home, and Ella finds her half-frown daughter and her mother to be far braver and more resourceful than she imagined. She must also reconcile herself to the pairing of her ex-husband and a close friend.
