For a first time author, Lori Benton knocked it out of the park. She did her research and intertwined historical details with a story that will draw you in. The characters are each so unique and yet come together in a story that I had a hard time putting down. My recommendation? Check out Lori Benton and this book. I don't think this is the last we're going to hear from her.

Burning Sky A Novel of the American Frontier Lori Benton 9780307731470 Books Reviews

What an achingly beautiful story!

Willa Obenchain has had her life ripped away from her too many times... to read this novel you have to keep this in mind, to understand the depths of her hurt, the depths of her fear, and the depths of her courage and love.

Even though she was taken away from her parents forcefully, she eventually learned to care for and blend into the people who took her captive. But when tragedy strikes again, destiny finds Willa walking once more the path towards her past life. But war, hurt and 12 years have not kept things as they once were - not Willa, not the people who once were close to her and not even her land. This might be exactly what she needs, though, to start a new new and lonely life.... because there's just so much pain a heart can take.

However, the Hand that holds all of our lives of course has another plan. One that involves bringing beauty from ashes and beginning to open the eyes of people torn away by war and hatred to see the beauty of a burning sky.

And among Neil MacGregor and a set of endearing characters, she will find a bunch that have loved her fully with all her quirks, strength and capacity to embrace two such different cultures.
This is another historical fiction book by Lori Benton that not only tells of life on the frontier but also deals with forgiveness and God's Grace to accept love and know that one deserves to be loved. This book is about a woman thAt was kidnapped by the Indians when she was a teen and after her Indian husband and children died she came back to the English world to try to find her parents. She had a lot of internal conflict as.She fully accepted The Indians as her family also. The town's people had a hard time accepting herbs k in society, did to the fact that she had not only lived with the Indians but embraced their culture. I was sad when the book ended and wanted an epilogue to the story, a few yeArs later after the story ended. I am really enjoying Lori Benton's books in this genre.
Burning Sky is Lori Benton’s debut novel. If I had not known that, I would never have suspected that Benton was not an author with several novels to her credit. This novel is just sooo good! Great sense of place, lyrical writing, complex characters, wonderful plot, thought-provoking themes — you just can’t get any better than this. And while Burning Sky is labeled an historical novel, it easily transcends the genre. If you have to categorize it, I would say it is literary fiction. Interested yet? Then go out and get it! You won’t be disappointed.

Willa Obenchain was abducted by the Mohawk Indians at the age of fourteen. Twelve years later she returns to her former home as changed as the settlement of Shiloh is. The Revolutionary War is over, her parents are missing and the status of their homestead is to be determined by a magistrate. Having faced loss repeatedly over almost half her life, Willa is determined to live alone, without any chance of getting hurt again. But of course life takes over — a wounded naturalist lays across her path, as do two orphaned half-breed children, and her Mohawk brother. There are also those who cannot let the past remain in the past and are determined to drive Willa from her land.

Burning Sky is a novel with many strengths. Benton has created a world long past, but very real to the reader. The frontier of New York in the 1780s is depicted with historical accuracy. The characters, major as well as minor, are well-drawn, having a complexity that adds depth to their motives and actions. Willa is perhaps the strongest female character I have experienced this year. Benton’s writing style is beautiful, especially in the conversation of Neil MacGregor. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a man who talked like that!

There is a lot to discuss with Burning Sky as well. My book club meets tonight, and I anticipate great conversation to come from this novel. Is love without loss possible? How does God shape families? Is a gentle spirit more desirable than physical strength in times of crisis? And then there is the whole topic of slavery vs Indian abduction — is there any difference?

Burning Sky is one of those books I will think about for a long time. And one I will recommend over and over.

Very Highly Recommended.

Great for Book Clubs.

(Thanks to Waterbrook for an ARC of this novel. The opinions expressed are mine alone.)
I'm not usually a fan of historicals -- the Romance genre isn't my favorite (though I do love a good romance if it's written well), and so many historicals I've read are so focused on the romance part, and it's usually fairly smarmy, so I'm not automatically drawn to this genre. But the premise of this one intrigued me, and am I ever glad I decided to give it a try. This book goes on my Favorites shelf. The writing style is beautiful, the story line is captivating, and the main characters felt like real people, people I cared very much for (well, the good guys anyway). Willa is strong without being unbelievable -- her heart wounds really spoke to me. And Neil -- oh, goodness, I love Neil! Such a "real" guy -- again, very relatable, very human, not one of those "perfect" heroes I can't stomach. And Joseph found a place in my heart, too. I lived inside this story as I read it, and hated to see it end, though I was well satisfied with the way it did. This story left me wanting more, but in a good way ... highly, highly recommend it!
