This is now a rather old book and most people probably are little interested in Haldeman’s take on the Watergate scandal, the Kent State shooting, and the downfall of the Nixon administration. Having lived through these events, I was particularly interested that Haldeman points to the Kent State shooting and subsequent campus strikes as the beginning of the end. His book is probably “self-serving” and a defense and justification for his action and role in the cover-up. The level of intrigue he describes is rather unbelievable but probably at least partly true.

Haldeman's memoirs containing some interesting revelations; unfortunately, it lacks an index. Like the rest of Nixon's people, Haldeman was amazed that anyone would consider the DNC headquarters worth breaking into, especially in an election year when Nixon was way ahead of McGovern (19 points in the June polls). Everybody immediately assumed that Colson was involved in the break-in. But Haldeman did not consider the Watergate burglary to be anything serious. He recalled that Nixon was amused when he read about the break-in "Damndest thing I ever heard of...The real stuff is in the candidate's headquarter's, not the Committee's." Haldeman found Jeb Magruder to be "eager but unreliable," given to "flights of fantasy." He recalled that Mitchell at that time was preoccupied with his suicidal wife and the Kleindienst hearings. Haldeman had never met Liddy, but had approved his transfer to CRP; Nixon was frustrated that CRP's intelligence section had so far produced nothing of interest. He would later wonder how the Democrats were so ready to go with a lawsuit against CRP just three days after the break-in.

He wrote of the Watergate tapes "In all of those Nixon references to the Bay of Pigs, [Nixon] was actually referring to the Kennedy assassination...After Kennedy was killed, the CIA launched a fantastic cover-up...The CIA literally erased any connection between Kennedy's assassination and the CIA...in fact, Counter Intelligence Chief James Angleton of the CIA called Bill Sullivan of the FBI and rehearsed the questions and answers they would give to the Warren Commission investigators." Haldeman seemed to be of the opinion that Castro was behind the assassination, and for some reason the CIA covered this up.

Chris Matthews wrote in 12/24/1995 that Haldeman "repeatedly denied ever writing the passage [about the Bay of Pigs]...Haldeman told me personally in the weeks just before his death that this particular passage in 'The Ends of Power,' was the creation of his ghost-writer." I personally don't find Matthews credible when talking about the JFK assassination, and it's hard to believe Haldeman didn't approve of everything his ghost-writer put in the manuscript.
It provides an inside look at the working of the Nixon White House. It could have used an index to make checking information easier.
One of the best of the post-Watergate books. Maybe it's the Dump nightmare talking, but I would love to have this as the national scandal again. I honestly think Haldeman was a good man who never fully understood the dangers of power until too late . Even Nixon was a smart man who more often than not had this country's best interest at heart even while fighting personal demons. Only president Dump could make the world nostalgic for Watergate.
Great resource for the coming years with this new, crazy, corrupt administration. I started studying Nixon when Trump won so that I could have a road map to the future and some relief from the anxiety that his craziness creates. We make it through Nixon - we can survive this, too. It is amazing the similarities.
I have read a lot of books about Watergate. My take has always been that Nixon did not authorize or even know about the break in. I know that it was not the authors intent, but now I believe he both knew and approved.
Fairly good read by one of those who got caught up by Nixon.
I must second the review of the reader from Malibu...a must read! Haldeman shows again (like in the "Haldeman Diaries") his human side and not the rigid company man that he's always made out to be. The break-in and subsequent cover-up (or as Haldeman says "containment") are explained with an insiders perspective and in what I must say, the best and most clarifying way that I've read (there's still a lot on Watergate that I haven't read though...). The only critique that I might make is I wonder how much of this was J.Dimona? S. Ambrose's "Ruin and Recovery" explains that Haldeman, in later years, refuted this book and it's conclusions and, if true, that would be a shame as the conclusions drawn from this book make the most sense given the advantage of over 20 years perspective. Even though this was published in 1979, many copies are still available and can be gotten for very reasonable prices ... so I'd again recommend this book highly.
