On a hostile world, long after the fall of Earth, a young boy must become a man.

A Rarefied View At Dawn edition by David Farland Literature Fiction eBooks

Equally touching, tender, and socially exploratory, A Rarefied View At Dawn by David Farland is a short story that takes place in the far future on a planet far from here.
Men and women are segregated by gender and on the mountain top fortress of Kara Kune most births are controlled, allowing only females to be born. But not always. Bann is a boy, but until he begins to approach puberty he doesn’t realize that there are any differences between himself and the others around him, including his best friend Maya. Only then does his mother take him on a journey that will change his view of everything.
The story begins high on a mountain above thick heavy mists and clouds over a low, sweaty jungle, and as the story progresses the reader literally and figuratively descends with Bann and Maya from the heights of innocence. It’s a dystopian society, and Farland’s short tale is a curious exploration at what happens when trends are taken to the extreme.
What is most interesting, though, might be Farland’s notes to the story. He tells a personal story about young woman who bounced from destructive relationship to destructive relationship, and his desire to examine what he sees as a societal trend towards the abandonment of young men and his interest in what happens if we allow these trends to cycle out of control.
The end result is a society that is, to say the least, distressing and destructive, hardly the kind that any of us would want. But that’s exactly what fiction is supposed to do: to hold up a mirror to our own world and ask what will happen if we continue down the current path. Farland does it well here, and I laud the effort, despite its conclusion.

A Rarefied View At Dawn edition by David Farland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A short story about two young people growing up in a fascinating world. Gender is not to be discussed. Men are anathema. Bann and his friend Maya have a choice to make as they learn that what they have always been taught may not be the truth.

Bann's development was fantastic, from a boy not quite understanding why he's different to a young man who determines that he does not belong in this world.

The end was both beautiful and heart-breaking.
David Farland has the gift to take you into an unknown world with a society vastly different than our own. The characters draw you into their world. One of the best science fiction stories I've read in a while.
This novella is very thought inducing. I can see what the writer was attempting to say. I was disappointed that the story line ended where it did, I would have liked to see what the men in his world were like.Pagan
This is an entertaining, well written story, with a really good message — but unfortunately it's let down by many typos, far too many for such a short story.
If it was to have these fixed, I'd certainly be happy to amend my rating to four stars, which the story certainly deserves.
But as it stands, if I give this to my kids to read, and say hey, this is really good, it's like I'm saying bad spelling and lots of typos are OK. So for now, I won't do that. So 3 stars. What a pity. It's a very good short story.
A Rarefied View at Dawn by David Farland is a captivating read from beginning to end. As a short story, it was the perfect length for me. It is a view of the differences between that the reader may or may not agree with, but gives the reader something to ponder. That the ending is abrupt gives the reader a place to think.
David is a brilliant author who takes us into his self-created world with fantastic characters just right for telling a story of "what if" women could live in a world separate from and superior to men. The main character is a male child brought up as female in a female world who, just at the corner of puberty, discovers he is a man and what that means in Lucien.
I was captured from the beginning of this story. It is a short story, but it gives you a lot to think about. I liked it because it put me in the point of view of somebody who is deemed different. And it struck a cord with me after putting it down and I wondered, "If I had something physical about me that would make me a second class citizen that I could 'fix' or 'remove' to fit in with everybody else, but at the cost of giving up who I really am, would I do it?" Anyway, the story telling and dialogue was great and it got me empathizing with others, so I consider this short story a home run!
On an alien planet, humanity is trying to survive. Genders are segregated, women living in vast cities and the men in the jungle below. 'A Rarefied View At Dawn' tells the story of Maya, a girl, and Bann, a boy, as they try to make sense of their gender, their natural urges and their friendship.
I really enjoyed this short story. I thought it was crafted extremely well. Immediately, the reader is plunged into this strange world and begins to understand more of its customs and beliefs. Several times I felt shocked at what humanity had come to, although the characters explain themselves well and almost convince you that perhaps the separation of gender is for the best.
The ending was wonderful too. I found it hopeful rather than sad. Bann and Maya dictate their own future on their terms, rather than societies. Because you never find out what, exactly, happens to them, it makes you think about what you would like to happen. How you would like their friendship to affect and change the world they live in.
All in all, I very much enjoyed this short story. It was thought-provoking and beautifully written.
