I would have never bought this book, if it had mentioned in its description, that the hero was penniless and looking for a rich wife. I just hate that story line, especially when the she is the one who has to pay for overnight lodgings, etc. as in this tale. For me it got worse. The main characters were instantly attracted to each other, both were strong-willed, smart and gorgeous, I liked that. What I did not like was, that though the heroine would of marry him in a NY minute(at one point she even asks him to court her, and forget about marrying someone else, as he wanted to do). The hero would not even consider it, even though the heroine had money and lands. And why was that? Simple, because he wanted to marry a rich but "English" woman, because by doing so he would advance his own personal fortune more, than if he marry the heroine who was Scottish. And this went on for almost the first half of the book.I am not picky about a particular historical period. What I love is for the hero to be the one who does the persuing (not the other way around), and if the heroine is reluctant even better. It is just a matter of personal taste, I am sure that many readers, might like the complete opposite scenario, to each its own. Catherine Creel is an author that owns to perfection, the theme I just described above. Years ago I read her historical, romance novels, and loved most of them. Unfortunately she is not availabe on Kindle.

LOVED IT!! read the whole book in one sitting! kept me entertained! characters were true to life...trying to deal with life as it came & still love whole heartedly keep them coming
The story captivates you from the first page till the last. The characters are charming, lovable, and the spice between Malcome and Anice starts your own heart beating fast. You have here a story line that takes you on their adventure. The suspence, makes you want to fight right along with the characters, and come out on top.I read this book in one and a half days. That's how good a story it is.
This is the first time I have read one of Terry Spear's books. I have enjoyed reading this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. She is a very excellent writer. I can't wait until I can read the next book of the series. I plan on reading all of the books in the series.
I read this one, and the second one in a bundle set, this is my review for that set Terry Spear can sure spin a tale. Braw handsome strong highlanders, strong willed beautiful lasses, Scottish countryside and highland castles. The first in the Highlanders series stories is awesome!!! Must Reads!!!!!
Excellent book a must read and with each word that is read you really are hooked, what an excellent writer! I never want to miss a book in every series and I highly recommend this book and all books by this author! Fantastic book, you will not want to put it down, I know I didn't and I wanted more and I feel that you will also! Great, Great, Book!
I had never read Terry Spear and was looking for a book to read, I came across her Highland Rake which I read and loved. At the end I noticed Ms Spear had other books and guess what Highland Rake was Book 3 of her Highland series, so I purchased Book 1 and 2 and 4. They are about four Highland brothers who are searching for brides but what they think they want in a bride isn't what they find. Each book that I've read so far (I'm on Book 4) has been an entertaining adventure and the characters in all the books are sprinkled in the others. I have enjoyed Books 1, 2 and 3 so far and I'm sure I will enjoy Book 4 also. I recommend if you are looking for a smooth written romp with a highlander you read one of Terry Spear's Highlanders series but start with Winning the Highlander's Heart and find out how his search for a English wife found him a Highlander bride sliding now a rope at King Henry's castle.
This was an enjoyable story that had me from the very beginning. Anice is smart, witty, and holds her on against both King, court, and Highlander. She knows what she wants and what she doesn't and is not afraid to express it. Malcolm is a man with a title but nothing else. He thinks an English bride will solve his dilemma but is intrigued by this Scottish lass at the King's court. Fate throws these two together and the adventure begins. There are many obstacles in the story to keep these two apart and it is interesting as the story develops to see how they handle these situations. This is a different take on the classic highland love story and I must say that it didn't disappoint in anyway. Great read.
Summary
Lady Anice vows to flee the amorous advances of King Henry I and return to her home in the Highlands where she hopes to find a laird to wed. She soon discovers her staff has vanished. Premonitions of imminent danger warn her of foul play, and she is certain she is cursed when it comes to marriage.
The king orders the Highlander Laird Malcolm MacNeill, who is seeking an English bride, to provide the lass safe escort and learn what has become of her staff. Escorting her home safely proves a dangerous trial in and of itself and Malcolm has difficulty keeping his heart out of the matter. When the king wishes Lady Anice be wed to one of his loyal barons, the issue is further complicated. Losing his heart to the lass means Malcolm could very well lose his head.
