For somebody who spent his childhood in East Europe, first under the Germans and later under the Soviets, "Piano Lessons" brings back memories. But I do have to remove one half of a star, despite of the fact that I enjoyed the book. It is hard to believe that a woman will marry a man for the unique reason of satisfying the last wish of her dead previous husband.
As I read this story, I kept waiting for the summary to end and the story to begin. Turns out the summary was the story. The characters are one dimensional. I didn't care about any of them. There was no suspense. There was no emotion--not the characters' and certainly not mine. All telling. No showing. There was no feel for time or location. Mood was totally absent. The story might as well have happened in a vacuum. Or Bolivia, since there was no description, just place names. In the end, my reaction was so what? It was only 99 cents, but I feel ripped off.
