Guyon is enigmatic, acidic, and brilliant. The two fall in love, although neither can acknowledge it for most of the novel. They become involved with Corvay, a thorougly evil man who has plans for them and France.

This is a very well written, and researched first novel. The love story is really at the heart of the book. I found myself rooting for Peter and Guyon and hoping that their love would survive the obstacles put before them by politics and their own personalities. It's a long book, but I found myself unable to put it down. I highly recommend it.

Developed characters, well-done interaction, real people.
